Tip - Dynamic Resizing

I don't know when it happened. I don't why it only works of Internet Explorer. This is a great discovery nonetheless - Dynamic Resizing of images in Google Sites.

The Discovery
It wasn't until recently that I started using IE for making Google Sites. The reason - Firefox and Chrome are logged into two other Google accounts. Anyways, that's not exactly important, what is important is that instead of the typical [ Small - Medium - Large ] you can scale an image to whatever you want it to be, and it looks pretty good too!

The Proof
Check out these two screen shots.

Resizing capability with Google Sites using Internet Explorer 9, who figured?

Dynamic scaling of images is a wonderfully nice tool to have.

The Impact
This development allows for flexibility within Google Sites. No longer must I have measurements exactly right for a vertical line divider...I can extend it when I need to.

The Questions
Will this interesting happenstance roll out for Google Chrome and Firefox? Is this an unannounced update or just a glitch that works really well? I really look forward to your comments and theories.

RSS Feed with Feedburner's BuzzBoost

Kyle here from Kirksville Web Design. For some reason the Embed RSS Feed featured gadget is broken and we all needed a solution to embedding an RSS feed into our Google Sites.

You needed it, we made it.

Using Feedburner, a service of Google, you can use this handy XML gadget I created to add a nice looking feed.

Simply go through the steps of adding your syndication to Feedburner and click on the "Publicize tab." From there, you'll see BuzzBoost - Republish your RSS Feed as HTML! Activate this service and customize your options. You'll see a code for adding this to your Google Sites webpage.

Copy this string of code, your Javascript URL for the feed. (See the highlighted part in the screenshot below.

Copy that code and get ready to use it!

"But Google Sites doesn't support Javascript" you may say. Google Sites supports Javascript in the confines of a gadget.

So, here's your gadget. Styled and everything, located at:

https://sites.google.com/site/htmlboxtesting/feedburner-buzzboost

  • Copy the link address for the xml gadget and go to your website
  • Edit Page
  • Insert
  • More Gadgets
  • Add gadget by URL
  • Paste URL
  • Add the Javascript URL
  • Save!
You can configure the gadget after the fact using Buzzboost to determine number of posts, snippets, etc.

New Site - TECHeasenc.com

If you are looking for more Google Sites inspiration I have one for you. Kirksville Web Design just finished a project with TECHease of Raleigh, North Carolina. I've posted some screenshots for you all with comments.

Also, I ran into a conflict and I want to give everyone a heads up. The error: This address is already being used. So how you do fix the This address is already being used error. My client was using Google Apps and bought their domain name from Google. So that web address was already spoken for. Here's what I did:
  • Requested admin access to client's Google Apps
  • Under Google Sites on the dashboard, I went to Site Mapping (www.google.com/a/yourcompany.com/SitesMappings)
  • Delete that Site Mapping for the spoken-for web address.
  • Proceed as usual (Google used GoDaddy.com to purchase the domain, unlock the domain and jump in DNS)
Anyways, to the screenshots!

Easy on the eyes.

Conquer .png for Google Sites
Tables, read the post on Magic Tables.
Background Images, I'm glad you get two.

Hope you all enjoy seeing our latest project.

New Template - Carbide

Kirksville Web Design has a new Google Sites theme available named Carbide, which sports a sophisticated design perfect for businesses, photographers, and tech websites.

Carbide makes good use of the 100+ new web fonts available for Google Sites, mainly using the popular Lobster font. The main background (background image) is textured and gradient to make it interesting. The footer background (background wrapper image) provides perfect space for footer information like links and contact info. Did you know that background wrapper image is layered above background image and background color. That makes it great for footer backgrounds!

Bold bright text really pops off the cool stark background

As seen here, you can use one grand image (site is 900px wide) to show off your product in high-definition. This would be perfect for embedding a video or iframe for a slideshow.

The navigation disregards even the horizontal navigation because of its limitation. Although your navigation title font can be changed, often times it is an entirely too small font size to warrant legibility.

Footer Background as Background Wrapper Image

Exotically colored button really stand out from the cold carbon style background, use this to your advantage.

This new free template is published to the Google Sites template database and is titled Carbide. Enjoy and explore.

Google Sites Security Update

The Security Issue
It was not possible to secure your content by not allowing your entire site or webpages to be iframed. Anyone could iframe your site since you had no protection against it.

The Update
You can prevent others from iframing your Google Site. See the provision below:

The Result
If someone tries to iframe your site into another Google Site or elsewhere, it will just be a blank iframe. For some of us, this resulted in our iframed content going missing. Just check the box in Manage Site options to reenable for iframed content.
