Google Sites Interface Overhaul

Google Sites receives a interface update in much the same style as the other Google Apps. This interface, like the others I'm sure, will catch you off guard - your classic icons will be replaced with sleeker, gray icons (The gray trend in web design seems to keep on growing.)

Here at Kirksville Web Design, we instantly could not resist hitting the "Try our new look" button and delving into a redesigned world of Google Sites. It's more contemporary in look and feel, but there's not effect on the content. If you can't seem to find how to implement the new look, go to:

What does this teach us about web design in general?

• It is important to keep your websites fresh. I have been bumping into too many websites from the 1990's. Reach out to these folks and tell them that they can have a contemporary website, with a contemporary interface.
• Incorporate the new cool tones in web design. Gray, Dark Gray, White, then hit it off with an eye-catching accent. Throw a hot orange or teal in the mix. Neutrals and a monotone. Webcreme is crawling with examples - check them out.
• Well designed icons, explore the free Plastique icon set of 400+ old fashioned, but cool gray icons.

New Feature - Quick Site Layout

INTRO
There is now a quick and easy way to edit Site Layout. For those new to Google Sites, the old way of things (which will be retired in due time) was to go to More > Manage Site > Site Layout. Then you would have to make changes, save, and see how those changes affected your website.

Here's what's new:

• Under More you will see "Edit Site Layout   New!"
• Site Layout can now be interactively changed.
• Options are available: Header, Horizontal Nav, Sidebar, Footer.

IMAGES

Header options are available when you select header area. Even the Header background image. Very nice.

It's been a while since I saw New! used in connection with Google Sites.

Little edit and add buttons allow you to make a lot of changes on the fly.

CONCLUSION

Google Sites is receiving more of the attention it deserves. As my Google Sites designing and consulting business, Kirksville Web Design, I continue to see how company's are using Sites. This is an application that won't go the way of the dodo. Many organizations, even Google, are taking advantage of the easy web building space of Google Sites.

Also, this is a new aesthetic feature. It's not adding some new functionality like Google Docs charts or something. This makes it easy to change the look and feel of a website. Now if only I could change the Horizontal Navigation font size, then I would be really overjoyed. =)

8. Be social :

How to Conduct an On-Page SEO Site Audit

The first thing an SEO should do when given a new project is to conduct an SEO site audit.A SEO site audit is a critical first step that SEOs must undertake to understand the state of SEO.

There are two basic options:

• A quick hit site audit where you go through the top level diagnosis with the site in a few hours.
• An exhaustive site audit that can take days.

Google Drive Folder Update & New Intranet Template

Sometimes the little subtle, hard-to-find updates make a difference. While the Google Drive folder embed is still relatively new, I have seen it widely used in internal sharing sites. That popularity has tipped the Google Sites team to make this feature even more worthwhile.

There are now 2 views available for the Google Drive Folder embed 1) List View 2) Grid View. By way of review, remember that the Google Folder feature is in Edit Page Mode > Insert > Folder.

The List View is what we are used to. However, even it has changed a bit. Please see the following two screenshots to get an idea of what I mean.

The List View used to be more compact and only had room for a description.

The New List View is more spacious and shows the When and Who last modified the Doc.

Grid view, seen just above, is a more direct way of viewing what is actually inside of document. It provides a little thumbnail view of the document, which leads to better quick selections. Drawings and Presentations also have thumbnails, while spreadsheets do not. It is very similar to the Google Drive folder view.

Why the change you may ask. Well, as I mentioned at the outset, File Sharing is becoming a hallmark of Google Sites, especially in the Intranet / Sharepoint Breaking model. Google is inching its way to becoming a real competitor in the way of usability. The interaction of Google Apps is the hugest selling point for Google Sites and it is becoming more of a viable argument with each update. Now we just need an "Add Search Box" option and we are good to go!

Secret Google Sites Update - Google Plus

UPDATE: 9/15/2011 This has been formally released today! Yay +1 buttons for all.

UPDATE: 8/31/2011 Although the +1 gadget is no longer as accessible, there is a gadget solution. Go to: More Gadgets > Public > "Google +1 button."

UPDATE: Seems the gadget has been removed, probably temporarily. Look for it soon.

At Kirksville Web Design, we love Google Plus, it's all the rage. It's a facebook killer some might say. It's just plain fun to learn and share with.

Now, the Google + button was a bit enigmatic as to what purpose it served at first, but now it totally makes sense when paired with the Google+ social network.

So immediately, when I went to post the Google + button on my Google Sites, it didn't work out. I had to host the code elsewhere and iframe it into the Google Site. An iframe, in case you don't know is a gadget that basically is a window into another website that doesn't have to even look like a window. It's very helpful for gadgets, in fact most gadgets are some form of iframe.

Anyways, so I couldn't easily put the Google + button on my Google Sites. WELL, unannounced update today or  maybe last night, you can place a Google Plus button no problem.

No Iframe needed, +1 button easy as pie!

You have several choice about your display of the +1 button. Small, Medium, Standard, Tall. You can find the dimensions for these buttons here.

Attack of the +1 buttons, Counter is Optional by the way

The New +1 button corresponds to the individual page you place it on. If the button is on www.kirksvillewebdesign.com/about-us, it will +1 that page, not www.kirksvillewebdesign.com. So go +1 crazy with all your pages. You can't afford not to.
