Freebie: 'Pixelated Seamless Tile Background'

Backgrounds and textures are increasingly important in contemporary web design. It can be hard to find suitable patterns for web design, I know, I've looked. It seems like everyone uses Adobe filetypes. Well here is a GIMP pattern (.pat) for free. See how I've used it below and then download it for yourself.

Create a high-tech look with this tile background. Not the crazy parallelograms, the gray part.
Use it for your background image in Google Sites for a fast-loading interesting background.

Try it as a table background. Remember edit html, background="image url here" in either <table> or <td>

Download the .png file using 'Pay with a Tweet.'

What is 'Pay with a Tweet'?
How can I convert this to use as GIMP pattern?
  • Open the .png file in GIMP > Save as... > Find your GIMP Folder (usually under your user) >save as a .pat > refresh your patterns and you should see it.

Google Sites Grows in Popularity

The proof is in the pudding as they say. Google Sites has taken the spot of  Google Reader on the Google toolbar common across its applications.

One Google employee commented:

I wanted to give you more information on the changes to the links at the top of Gmail. Google is always working to improve our products, and that often results in changes such as the one you are seeing.

While the link to Reader has moved, you can continue to access Google Reader under the "More" dropdown. Or, you can also set a specific bookmark to reader.google.com for one-click access. Depending your browser, try dragging http://reader.google.com right from this post onto the bookmark bar on your browser (usually below the URL bar). I've attached some additional information on bookmarks below.

In the meantime, I've shared your feedback with the rest of the team.

Thanks to googlesystems.blogspot.com for sharing this unofficial change and also noting the trend toward Google Sites. Check out this line graph.

Redesigned Google Sites Commenting

Guess what? You can now see the faces of those who are commenting on your Google Site. But let's be honest, how many of you are actually using the comments system in Google Sites? I haven't stressed this feature to my clients but perhaps now I'm a bit more proud of the commenting system at the footer of Google Sites pages.

What's new?
You get portraits, a better looking design, and notification settings.

Tip: If you don't want the comments feature at the bottom of a specific page, go to More > Page Settings > Disable Comments.

Conclusion
This is a small feature upgrade, but perhaps it will allude to the much more demanded public commenting system people have been clamoring for. I mean, add public comments to your announcements so that it acts more like a blog. It's been difficult to integrate Disqus to Google Sites (can be done but looks pretty clunky). In the meantime, this is nice for those who are already using the editor/owner comments for improving their intranet. It's like leaving sticky notes for people to improve pages I think.

Interview with Stephen Hind of Steegle.com

Stephen Hind is the creator/writer of Steegle.com, an excellent crossroads of everything Google Sites related. Stephen is a Top Contributor on the Google Sites help forums and a well-known Google Sites guru.

Interviewer: Kyle Horst of Kirksville Web Design

Tell us about yourself.

I’m an IT Manager for a training company in the UK. My history of using and developing for the web started when I used to own my own company and a customer wanted me to make some web pages, so I learned how to. I moved on from there to work for the National Health Service in the UK, developing and maintaining websites for them. At the NHS I learned a great deal about PHP, MySQL but most importantly accessibility and usability. From there I moved to RWP Training where I was employed to look after their IT infrastructure and develop some web-based projects and re-develop the website.

What’s your favorite food?! =)

See my profile! ;-)

(Kyle looks it up) Spaghetti Carbonara, let’s face it - you love bacon and cheese.

Too right!

When and why did you start using Google Sites?

I started using Google Sites the week it was released. I saw it promoted on the Google Apps sign in screen as Google Sites was only first available as part of Google Apps. I thought “websites created by a Google tools - we’re on to a winner here”. I immediately gave it a go and I saw it would be a really powerful App.

I noticed there were some limitations and didn’t know why so I went along to the Help Group and asked a couple of questions. I found that I could answer way more than I needed to ask and the Google Employee that manned the forum was very responsive, so I stuck around and answered a lot of questions.

We all appreciate your help on the forums. You are all over the place answering the tough questions that users like me used to have. I think a big ‘thank you’ from the Google Sites community is in order. Expect a dozen roses coming your way.

How was the Google Top Contributor Summit?

Fantastic! It was great to meet all the people I have been chatting online with for so long. It was a wonderful opportunity to get face-to-face with Googlers and the other TCs. Google was very open and gave us a great insight into various products.

The Google Top Contributor Summit was a gathering of Google Help Forums’ most prolific helpers on September 12-13. It was the first event of this sort. Several Google Sites top contributors attended. For a recap on this event at the Googleplex at Mountain View, CA see this blog post.

What do you think the future of Google Sites is?

Exciting! Now Google has released page-level permissions, a huge update to Google Sites, they can start working on other stuff, so the future is bright.

What do you think Google Sites biggest flaw is?

Well I don’t think Google Sites has flaws but it definitely does have missing features, but that’s how Google works: release early and iterate. What I’d love to see is Public Comments (that will make Google Sites behave much more like a blog) so I definitely want it, also having CSS would be fantastic so you can make your sites look even better, but you don’t seem to have any trouble in doing that!

What’s next for Steegle? Any big plans or just stay the course?

Just stay the course: I work full time so the stuff I do on Google Sites is something I do in my spare time. I love watching Google Sites develop and get better over time so I don’t think I will ever get bored of it or want to move to a different platform.

Final thoughts?

Thanks for wanting to interview and thanks to Google for the Summit, a fantastic two days. Thanks to the Google Sites Team for all of the updates they have provided over the years. It was great to see the recent addition of the +1 button for Google Sites and my Google Analytics shows that people are using it a lot.

Stephen is online on twitter @Steegle and +Stephen Hind on Google +. His website is a mainstay for Google Sites education at http://www.steegle.com.

Favorite Free Font - Sahara

I love typography, especially when it is free. In honor of this gem I found from UpperType, here's a fun graphic.

Also, just for your information, the sub font used is Sansita One.

Google Sites User Survey Available

New Google Sites User Survey available.

Go ahead, take it.
Here is a direct link:

https://survey.googleratings.com/wix/p3925964.aspx?V1=ND&ke=1&l=9

Feedback has done great things for Google Sites, like page-permissions. Take a moment.

What did I write about?

Column Widths - The sidebar page templates are often too small. This would allow for more interesting layouts.

Premium Templates - let designers like myself sell our work, like wordpress.

Dedicated Footer Background - with ability to span browser width.

Horizontal Navigation Padding Toggle - I want to be able to bring an image flush to the navigation bar.

Better Gadgets Community - a better database, organization, top / popular / high-rated gadgets. Unappealing is the gadget system, which is lack luster compared to Wordpress or other competitors. Finding solid plugins is a frustration.

Background Image Rendering - If you use background image as a header background it doesn't properly render (appears higher) when logged into the Google Site.

What did you write about?

Google Sites Survey Available

It seems like these surveys crop up every other month or so. Since Google Sites received a recent update with the new "Edit Site Layout" option in the More button, they must be listening to the community of Google Sites users. That update was more of a convenience than anything, not a new feature, but I use it all the time now, especially on adding links to my Horizontal Navigation.

Anyways, please take your time to fill out the Google Sites survey the best you can. This feedback will undoubtedly point the Google Docs team to implement most wanted features.

How would you describe Google Sites in one word?

Most often I choose words like: efficient, easy, versatile. Tell me what you think and stay tuned for more Google Sites news.

PHP Switch Statement Tutorial with Practical Example

What is PHP Switch Statement?

According to php.net The Switch Statement is similar to a series of IF statements on the same expression. In many occasions, you may want to compare the same variable (or expression) with many different values, and execute a different piece of code depending on which value it equals to. This is exactly what the switch statement is for.

PHP Switch  Statement Syntex

switch (n)
{
case label1:
  code to be executed if n=label1;
  break;
case label2:
  code to be executed if n=label2;
  break;
default:
  code to be executed if n is different from both label1 and label2;
}

PHP Switch  Statement Practical Example

Objective : Creating a program to enter two number and select task from list then display the result.

Coding
<?php
$n1=$_POST['t1'];
$n2=$_POST['t2'];
$ch=$_POST['choice'];
if(isset($_POST['done']))
{
switch($ch)
{
case 'add':
$res=$n1+$n2;
break;
case 'sub':
$res=$n1-$n2;
break;
case 'mul':
$res=$n1*$n2;
break;
case 'div':
$res=$n1/$n2;
break;
}
}
?>
<html><head><title>Form</title></head>

<input type="radio" name="choice" value="add">ADD
<input type="radio" name="choice" value="sub">SUB
<input type="radio" name="choice" value="mul">MUL

Update! New Google Sites Background Options

Intro
Google Sites has been lacking some major features in the background department for many years. There are two background images that you can utilize: Background Image and Wrapper Image.

Wrapper Image have a higher z value than Background Image, meaning it can be superimposed (be on top of) Background Image. That's where most of the fun was for using background images in Google Sites. You could have a header (wrapper image) sitting on top of a general pattern or photo (background image).

The Google Sites team has added something new into the mix! Fix and Stretch those backgrounds.

Fixed Backgrounds
What is meant by a Fixed position background? You may have seen these for years, typically on Blogger blogs. Basically the image is stuck to the background so that no matter how much you scroll, it is seemingly fixed.

Here's an example of this effect: http://elefant-art.com/

Stretched Backgrounds
Called "Stretch to cover" this option will ensure that your photo or background image is stretched to cover 100% of the viewers screen. This is a bit of a gamble since you never know what kind of screen people are viewing your website on.

For this option use a giant photo that can scale and stay looking sharp.

Using Fixed and Stretched Backgrounds Together
The best way for me to explain is to show you all an example.

https://sites.google.com/a/kirksvillewebdesign.com/fixedstretched/

Take a look. I am using the background image as a stretched and fixed image. I am also using the wrapper image, but not with any stretch or fixed options. Therefore the background image sort of scrolls away, but with a novel effect of appearing fixed.

There are a bunch of these example at:  http://onepagelove.com/tag/fixed-background

They will help you think in this mode and see what is possible for this fun new background option.

Conclusion
What can we reason this update is for? Obviously this is purely a design preference. It's been an option in Blogger forever and it just adds to all the bells and whistle you can make to design up a creative Google Site. Perhaps the Sites team is attempting to allow for more beautification of templates. Remember, Google Sites is an application within Google Apps and Google Apps is constantly taking in feedback from paying customers. So maybe the market share for Sites is growing and the user base demands more customization. Google Sites needs to keep pace with the other applications and this update is one of those boosts it needed.

Let's stay tuned to what else happens. These are exciting times.

News - Google Sites Accessibility

Summary:

Google Sites has the ability to speak actions that are taken place for the benefit of the blind. Also, hotkeys are promoted within Google Sites.

Significance:

Accessibility for people of all sorts is a good thing. Google Sites is that much more viable to companies who strive to provide fair opportunity to all their employees. As for hotkeys, I wouldn't emphasize that significance too much as I don't use them. However, if I want to turn Google Sites into a real-time strategy game, I'm all set!

Article:

Today we announced some of the updates we’ve released recently to make Google’s applications more accessible to the blind community. For Google Docs and Sites, we’re pleased to announce new keyboard shortcuts and better screen reader support for our blind users.

Screen reader support in Google Docs and Sites
To help blind users read, edit and navigate content, Google Docs (including documents list, documents and spreadsheets) and Sites now support two screen readers: JAWS and ChromeVox. Here are a few examples of how screen readers work in Google Docs and Sites:
In documents, you’ll hear feedback when you format text or insert tables, lists or comments in your document.
In spreadsheets, you’ll hear the cell’s location, contents and comments when moving between cells.
In both documents and spreadsheets, you’ll hear feedback as you navigate to areas outside the main content area, such as the menu bar, chat pane and dialog boxes.
In your documents list, you’ll hear feedback when you upload or download a file, organize collections or move between files in your documents list.
In Sites, you’ll hear feedback as you navigate and manage your sites, create and edit pages, and navigate through menus and dialog boxes.

For a complete list of screen reader-supported features and instructions for how to use them, visit the Docs and Sites help centers.

New keyboard shortcuts

We’ve also added new keyboard shortcuts to make it easier to use Google Docs and Sites. In your documents list, for example, you can use the up and down arrow keys to move through the files in the list, and you can open the selected document by hitting Enter. For a complete list of keyboard shortcuts, please refer to the help center articles for spreadsheets, documents, documents list and Sites.

With these new accessibility features, we hope to make it easier for everyone to use Google Docs and Sites. Please use this form to share your feedback directly with the accessibility team so we can continue to improve our products.

Working Tutorial - How to solve 301 redirect problem using .htaccess

301 redirects are used to permanently move a site to a new location. Search engines do not apply penalties to 301 redirects the way they apply them to many other types of redirects.
Some times when you generate SEO reports you see 301 redirect problem. The most common one is you website example.com is not redirecting to www.example.com. Redirecting requests from a non-preferred domain is important because search engines consider URLs with and without "www" as two different websites.

Note: if you solve this problem then you will see 15% increase in search traffic

use Following Code in your .htaccess file
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
rewritecond %{http_host} ^openplus.in [nc]
rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.openplus.in/$1 [r=301,nc]

Replace openplus.in with your domain name.
This tutorial is tested for domain openplus.in , server used apache.

New Feature - Customise Your Google Sites SYSTEM Footer Links

Howdy Google Siters,

Google have added a new feature recently which allows you to hide 'Sign In, Recent Changes or the Print Page' links from the automated Google Sites System Footer.

Just log into your site > More Actions > Site Layout > Customise System Footer Links > decide which links to hide (unfortunately you can not remove them all just the ones I mentioned earlier but it's a start!) > click ok > click save changes

Let me know if you have any problems.

Working With Templates - having a problem with a public Google Sites template and you can't locate that pesky rogue logo?

Change Your Sites Logo - are you having a problem with a public template and you can't locate that pesky rogue logo?

ok.....

there are possibly a few ways the logo or image could be attached to the top of the page

click on more actions > manage site > colours and fonts > scroll down and click on Site header background image and see if that is where the logo is

if the logo is not there ..... click on more actions > manage site > site layout > change logo and see if it is there ......

And last but not least, the template logo could be part of the background image.

If this is the case you will need to click on view, save the image to your pc and then edit the image by placing your logo over the top for example in a program such as photoshop.

Let me know if this sorts out the situation for you.....

New Hangout Buttons on Google Sites

How it works

For the Hangout Web Conference there are two fields:

  • Emails
  • Profile IDs
Email: Self-explanatory, your Google Email account.
Profile ID: Check your Google + URL. Mine is KyleHorst, because my Profile on Google Plus URL is https://plus.google.com/+KyleHorst .  The + symbol is not needed in the field.

For the Phone Call Button
  • Just your phone number, no spaces, dashes, parentheses, etc.

Have fun with this new Google Sites update! Love it!
